Resonance and Acceleration: Capturing the Dualities of a Weekend Day
For this project I started from two important thoughts that Hartmut Rosa puts in his book which is the basis of the project: acceleration and resonance. Modern life is constantly accelerating. The tools that allow us to save time have now reached an enormous level of development thanks to production and communication technologies, yet the impression of not having enough time has never been so widespread. In all Western societies, people suffer from a lack of time and feel compelled to run even faster, both to reach a goal and not to lose positions in social / work spheres. Undergoing the pressure of an inexorable rhythm, each of us faces the world without being able to contain that impersonal compulsion to speed and competition that cannot be separated from discomfort and dissatisfaction. In short, acceleration has become a "power" that totally dominates modern society. It devours our "dreams, goals, desires and life plans" crushing them within the gears of its unstoppable movement. What can we do to reclaim moments of non-alienated human experience, of a "good life" in accordance with our truest aspirations and desires? I tried to identify points in a final day after a week of work and I identified five, some of these points are part of the acceleration in which we live our time, others are part of a search to recover "lost" time in the acceleration for reasons that are essential to our very existence in a typical contemporary Western society. Each photo tells a moment, relating the person to time and the moments lived because "Systematics Imperatives" of life in society: accelerated temporal moments that we live and that we try to improve by passing a time to chase away the alienation that society unfortunately it imposes, putting into practice a constant resonance in socialization, letting itself go alone in a world that in part recharges and graces us with utopian fantasies fundamental for living, that is the orpheic world.
1-Waiting
Standing at the bus stop, anxiety grips me as I await the arrival of a vehicle that will determine whether I’ll be late for work. In this moment, the acceleration of time is palpable, heightening my sense of urgency and the constant pressure to keep up.
2-Working
As I organize the inventory and neatly place tools into bins, a sense of calmness and order emerges. Despite the structured environment, there is a fleeting yet meaningful exchange with colleagues—a form of resonance that transforms obligatory work time into moments of connection and camaraderie.
3-Resting
Lunchtime offers a brief respite. We each unpack our food and engage in conversation. Though the topic often circles back to work, this hour of pause provides a sliver of time to resonate with each other amidst the prevailing demands of our professional lives.
4-Partying
Long last! After a week of work, the weekend arrives, I can allow myself time that is not just: eat, work, rest. Today I'm going to a Party at a friend's house. We will drink and dance until morning even if time will pass like a shot: the sand in the hourglass ends earlier while you spend time in the company of friends, people we love and have fun with. "If acceleration is the problem, then resonance may well be the solution", but the problem is: how long can we manage this resonance? The important thing is the quality of the time we spend, this can be the real search for resonance.
5-Sleeping
Here we are, this day is gone. I have come to the end of the systematic imperatives that mark our day, our life, our time. Time passes fast while we are awake, sometimes we are lucky enough to spend it in good company and it passes as fast as lightning, other times when we attend the duties to live in this society it passes as slow as a boring slow motion movie. In the end, however, comes the moment of the nap, the moment of the discovery of places where time does not have the same flow as it does in the reality that we live in flesh and blood: an adventure of our own, with time in resonance with our essence, the pure resonance time we need to face another day.
